About the Diploma

3 teenage girls discussing work

The Diplomas is a new national qualification that will form part of the government initiative for 14-19 reforms.

They will enable students to acquire the practical skills and knowledge they need to progress into further or higher education as well as into training and employment. Aimed at England’s 14-19 year olds, the Diplomas will be taught at three levels in subjects covering a broad range of sectors.

A total of 17 Diplomas will be rolled out over the next four years, to sit alongside the foundation learning tier apprenticeships, GCSEs, A levels and the international baccalaureate. The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure will be available for first teaching from September 2010.

Universities, colleges and employers have all been involved in the development of the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure, in a bid to create what has the potential to become the ‘flagship’ qualification for all 14-19 years olds wanting to enter the sport and active leisure sector.

The Diploma combines both class work and hands-on experience that gives students the opportunity to gain a fully rounded education through a number of learning methods within the environments of both the classroom and the workplace.

Work-relevant learning is a widely accepted progression route for all young people and has proved successful. It is a unique combination of learning that aims to excite and motivate students to study in broad industry areas of interest.

By September 2009, the first ten Diplomas will be delivered in 136 local authorities by 317 consortia, with an estimated 94,000 young people expected to begin their course of study.

The first five diplomas on offer will be construction and the built environment, engineering, society health and development, information technology and creative media, which will all be available from September 2008. Hair and beauty, manufacturing, business administration and finance, hospitality and catering, and environment and land based studies will be available to students from September 2009.

Please note that this qualification is available to students in England only.
