Jeremy

Youths line up to play football

This case study is an illustration of what the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure may involve. It is based on a fictional character studying the foundation Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.

Name – Jeremy
Age
– 15
Location
– Nottingham
Subject
– Foundation Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.
Jeremy is studying for a Foundation Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.

One of his subjects requires the students to create a model of the structure of the human body. This is a group work activity and Jeremy is nominated to lead the project, using basic methods to measure the size and make up of the human body. Within the group, he is able to develop his leadership and communication skills. (FS: ENG, MATH, PLTS: TWPLT, EPPLT, SMPLT)

Jeremy works at the local fitness centre at the weekend. This part time job can be included as part of the minimum 10 days experience of work. This type of work placement fits in well with the diploma as the work placement should be in a relevant setting and sector that supports their overall learning programme. Over the 10 days Jeremy’s key task is to develop and run a basic warm up and cool down for an activity session and put in place the knowledge gained from a unit on customer service in the industry. (FS: ENG, ITC, PLTS: SMPLT, EPPLT)

On top of this, Jeremy and his class take part in a business mentoring exercise with 5-Star Stewarding. This is an example of another form of work-related learning that complements work experience for diploma students. (FS: ICT, ENG, PLTS: CTPLT, EPPLT)

Jeremy is also introduced to the part that sport and active leisure plays within the UK economy through the impact on the private sector, the impact of government social policy on the industry and the inter-relationship of the industry to other industries, including the media. (FS: ENG, PLTS: IEPLT, RLPLT)
