SkillsActive has joined in partnership with a top university sports team, adding a new name to the growing list of employers in the Diploma Employer Champion Network.

Team Northumbria, the associated sports team behind the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, has become just one of the many new regional employer champions for the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure, in a bid to enhance employer involvement in and awareness of the Diploma across England.

The Diploma offers students the opportunity to progress into higher education following successful completion of the Advanced Level Diploma and this partnership is a step towards further developing affiliations not only with North East employers, but with higher education as a whole.

Team Northumbria has the vision to become renowned for its innovation and success through its regional, national and international contribution, across an extensive network of enterprising partnerships and programmes. It aims to contribute, as a partner, in the delivery of a sports development programme through a community sports network of county sports partnerships, government agencies, national governing bodies and local authorities, and it shares strong links with the Diploma and provides a strong resource of qualified employees within the sport and active leisure sector.

Sue Vout, partnership development manager for Team Northumbria, said:

”Northumbria University fully supports the Diploma in Sports and Active Leisure. It is an important step forward in the education of young people, by providing opportunities for them to gain applied experience alongside classroom based learning. The Diploma will contribute to the growing need for skilled young people in the sport and active leisure workforce. It will provide opportunities for them to gain experience in real-life working environments, which is so valuable in the competitive jobs market. The opportunity to learn in a work-based setting is so important in sport, which is such a vibrant and dynamic sector.”
