Headline Messages
• All students achieving a Foundation or Higher Diploma should be congratulated.
• As for any qualification, not all students who were hoping to complete a Foundation or Higher Diploma this summer have managed to do so. In some cases this will be because they have decided to take longer to complete the qualification.
• The qualifications that form the separate components of a Diploma stand as qualifications in their own right. All students who do not complete the full Diploma will receive a Diploma Progress Statement setting out their achievements so far and options available to enable them to re-sit and achieve their Diploma at a later date.
• The Diploma is a flexible qualification which can be achieved at any point. Students will continue to achieve their Diplomas from September onwards when they have completed all components and met the required standard.
• Students who have not completed the full Diploma may still be able to progress within their school or to college based on the components they have achieved to date.
Key facts - Diploma
• The Foundation Diploma is a level 1 qualification. It is graded A*-B and is currently treated as equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D-G.
• The Higher Diploma is a level 2 qualification. It is graded A*-C and is currently treated as equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A*-C.
• This is the first year that a full two year cohort of Diploma students will achieve their results. A small number (188) Diplomas were awarded last year to students who completed the Foundation or Higher Diploma in one year.
• Phase 2 Diplomas were only introduced in September 2009 (Hair and Beauty Studies; Environment and Land Based Studies; Hospitality; Manufacturing and Product Design; Business, Administration and Finance). Numbers achieving Phase 2 Diplomas will therefore be low because they are post-16 students who have achieved the Diploma in one year. The vast majority of students taking these five Diplomas will receive their results next summer.
