What are the components of the Diploma?
Principal learning – developing the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes relevant to a sector or sectors using realistic contexts and materials wherever possible. Additional/specialist learning – allowing learners to specialise further or to select units that will complement their programme. Generic learning – providing the learner with the essential skills including maths, English and ICT, which will prepare them for successful employment, training and further study.

Where can I get up to date information?
DCSF issue a quarterly enewsletter to those who subscribe which us available for those working in the HE sector. The newsletter provides valuable information about the entire 14-19 reforms as well as announcements on the Diplomas . Register here to subscribe.

How have universities reacted to the Diploma?
UCAS, the universities admission service ruled that it was equivalent to three and a half A levels. This decision means that the Advanced Diploma will be a recognised route into Higher Education. Many universities will have included formal statements about the acceptability of Diplomas on the UCAS website.

What is the Teacher Development Agencies (TDA) position on Diploma's as entry to Initial Teacher Training (ITT)?
The TDA don't endorse or prescribe any qualifications for entry on to ITT courses. They only stipulate a minimum of good maths and English GCSEs, and for primary school ITT, a science GCSE. Of course, you need to be a graduate to gain qualified teacher status. Beyond this it's up to ITT providers to decide who to admit to courses. The DDP have produced an example progression route into ITT which can be found in the interactive and career areas of this website.

When will we see the first Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure students applying to us?
The first Diploma and Sport and Active Leisure, starting in 2010, will graduate in 2013.

Can we get involved in Diploma Delivery
Absolutely. Involvement from Higher Education is critical for the success of the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure. Your engagement will ensure that the Diploma is meeting the needs of Higher Education, producing the caliber of students you require. Higher Education can get involved by contacting the 14-19 manager within their Local Education Authority for further details.You can also be included in a consortia bid to help deliver the diplomas, as you may have the best facilities or in-house expertise to deliver a part of the diploma course.
